The Green Economy Gathers
February 26, 2009 Issue High Country Press
Story by Sam Calhoun
“The green economy is in this room tonight,” said Ged Moody, ASU Entrepreneur in Residence. “Today is the beginning of the discussion, and I encourage you to continue it with yourself, friends, family, coworkers, superiors, competitors—everyone in your life.”
More than 220 community members, business owners, academics, renewable energy experts and students gathered in the ASU Plemmons Student Union’s Blue Ridge Ballroom last Tuesday, February 24, for the Realizing Green Business Opportunities information and networking event, hosted by the ASU Center for Entrepreneurship. The event included presentations from Moody, Frontline Conservation’s Jeffery Scott and Building Performance Engineering Technical Program Director Scott Suddreth, as well as a networking session that featured more than 30 booths from local businesses, business incubators and community organizations that are part of the local green economy.
The intent of the event was to provide local community members with two areas of information: A solid understanding of the technologies involved in going green, and how owners and their businesses can position themselves to take part in this green economy, including identifying the local resources available to assist.
“I can’t believe the size of the crowd tonight—this is a great opportunity for us,” said Scott. “It is possible to take a common good that we all collectively care about and make a business. This event is all about making connections to reach that common goal.”
“I believe we can think green and make green,” said Moody. “Our economy is in turmoil; it’s a perfect time for entrepreneurs—green entrepreneurs—to step in and take over. We are driving the market to green. In our community, we are so much better positioned to take advantage of the green economy than places like Charlotte or Raleigh. We’re smaller; we all know each other. We are here to join the green economy. We need to be the green economy.”
