Entrepreneurship and the Arts
In late April, Dr. Mark Pruett of ASU’s Center for Entrepreneurship took a group of students to the Self-Employment in the Arts (SEA) conference in Tampa, Florida.
Dr. Pruett and Margaret Yaukey, a professor in the Art Department with business experience and an interest in arts entrepreneurship, took three students to the conference, which had about 170 participants. Megan Ward is a management/art history dual major, Dayna Seman is an arts management/studio art dual major and participates in the Association of Student Entrepreneurs club, and Philip Hull is a master’s candidate in a crafts program in the technology department. Each is interested in the opportunities for being a self-employed artist or in running an arts-related business, so the conference was perfectly on target for them.
SEA conferences are for students who are considering running their own businesses related to fine and performing arts, or who want to earn a living as an independent self-employed artist or performer. The conferences bring students together with people who are self-employed in various facets of the arts to learn more about what life is really like on your own, meet students from other schools, participate in discussions, and make some contacts.
The Tampa SEA was hosted by the School of Business at the University of Tampa. It included speakers from visual, performing, and literary arts, on subjects as diverse as copyright issues, artists’ collectives, and marketing.
Professors Pruett and Yaukey also spent time with the conference organizers learning about the mechanics of the conference in order to explore possibilities for future programming at ASU.
The Center for Entrepreneurship gratefully acknowledges travel funding provided by the Appalachian Regional Development Institute and AdvantageWest.
