New Entrepreneurship Curriculum

The Department of Management in the John A. Walker College of Business at Appalachian State is pleased to announce the creation of a new program in entrepreneurship. All courses offered in the program are open to both business and non-business students. Beginning next fall, business students can specialize in entrepreneurship with a new Concentration in Entrepreneurship within the Management Major. This concentration requires 24 hours of upper division course work, including 18 hours dedicated to entrepreneurship and related courses.
“There is increasing interest in entrepreneurship among both business and non-business students at ASU,” says Bryan Toney, Director of Appalachian State’s Center for Entrepreneurship. “This new concentration is a first step in providing more entrepreneurship education opportunities for all of our students. It not only helps better prepare students who want to own their own business, but it also makes them more valuable employees in an increasingly entrepreneurial world.” In a recent survey, 86% of business students at ASU said they have thought about starting a business. 11% have a definite plan. 35% said their primary career aspiration is to own their own business. One of six non-business students also plan to start a business. 52% of non-business students said they would like to add a course in entrepreneurship to their major field of study.
With the new concentration, students can now begin taking entrepreneurship courses during their junior year with the addition of a new course, Survey of Entrepreneurship (MGT 3060). They can then choose 12 hours of electives including the following new courses in entrepreneurship: Fostering and Managing Creativity (MGT 3170), International Entrepreneurship (MGT 3190), New Venture Creation (MGT 4650) and Entrepreneurship Practicum (MGT 4680).
The Concentration in Entrepreneurship has also been designed so that students may customize the program based on their individual interests. For example, students interested in marketing can take Marketing electives. Students interested in technology may, with permission, take electives in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, or Technology.
The ideal student for this program has a passion for entrepreneurship and an idea they want to develop into a business. That student can conduct research related to their business, interact with entrepreneurs in the field, and develop a complete business plan before they graduate. Students from all disciplines across campus are encouraged to take advantage of these new course offerings.
Students can also take advantage of the many co-curricular opportunities offered by the Center for Entrepreneurship including the annual Carole Moore McLeod Entrepreneur Summit, the “Pitch Your Idea in 90 Seconds” student business idea contest, the Association of Student Entrepreneurs club, internships, mentoring, workshops and other activities sponsored by the Center.
