Global Opportunities Conference

October 10, 2008

The first annual High Country Global Opportunities Conference will be held in Boone on Friday, October 10, 2008 from 1:00 to 3:30 PM in Raley 1020 on ASU's campus followed by a reception in the Raley Faculty Lounge.

The conference is targeted to businesses, students and anyone else in the region who wants to learn more about global opportunities.

Speakers:

- Ron Reighter, VP Global Trade Solutions, SunTrust Bank
Introduction and Overview: Why should you go international?

- Greg Sizemore, Director Charlotte U.S. Export Assistance Center How to go global: What are the opportunities available and first steps? What are export opportunities? Why is it important to understand other cultures?

There will be two separate panel sessions 30-45 minutes each with a question and answer session afterwards. Panelists will provide a summary of their international endeavors and successes/challenges. Afterwards, they will be open for questions from the participants.

Panel 1: Doors Successfully Opened with a Global Key

- Grace Palacios-Will: President/CEO Charney/Palacios & Co., Regional Managing Director, Publicitas Latin America
Ms. Palacios-Will will provide details on how her small international marketing and advertising business expanded into a global one.

- Frankie and Theresa Davis: Owners of Global Shippers Association
The Global Shippers Association is a global shipping company located in Lenoir, NC. Mr. and Mrs. Davis will talk about importing and exporting in North Carolina.

- Mr. Kerron Stokes, Regional Vice President, RE/MAX Central Atlantic and RE/MAX Carolinas
Mr. Stokes will give details and insight on opportunities for foreign investment in the U.S. housing market because of the weak dollar.

Panel 2: Opening the Doors Wider to Expand International Opportunities

- Dr. Marty Meznar, Assistant Dean of International Programs and Assessment
Dr. Meznar will expand on his international experiences and provide information on the importance of corporate and social responsibility in a global context.

- Russ Yelton, Executive Director of Entrepreneurial Ventures and Business Incubation, AB/Tech Center for Business and Technology Incubation
Mr. Yelton received a European Union grant to complete international training in regards to sustainability. He is working with twenty four other researchers from around the world and will discuss their work.

- Dr. Mark Pruett, Assistant Professor, Department of Management, Appalachian State University
Dr. Pruett attended a conference and workshop on Social Entrepreneurship in Denmark in July and will tell about his experiences and ideas generated from this conference.

Reception: Meet and Greet

This will be an opportunity for conference participants to meet each other, learn of international opportunities in the area and establish a network to reduce overlap in the market. It will be located in faculty lounge on fourth floor of Raley Hall. Refreshments will be provided for all students, regional business owners, and speakers to meet and interact with each other. If business owners would like to have a booth set up to specifically target student recruitment and promote their business, they are encouraged to participate by donating a minimum of $100 to AIESEC Appalachian.
