Free workshops in March and April

March 26, 2008

Workshops on Technology Commercialization, Capital Formation and Intellectual Property will begin March 26, sponsored by the Center for Entrepreneurship and the BioNetwork BioBusiness Center at AB-Tech.

These programs are open to everyone - educators, students and members of the local community. All programs will be held at the Appalachian Enterprise Center at 130 Poplar Grove Connector in Boone.

On Wednesday, March 26 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Paul Knott, Curriculum Coordinator from the BioBusiness Center, will provide an “Introduction to Technology Commercialization”. This program will introduce participants to the "Goldsmith" model for technology commercialization. The program will cover the commercialization process, pre-funding efforts and expectations, understanding investor needs and programs, enterprise valuation, and recognizing and managing business risk in its various forms.

On Wednesday, April 9 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Socrates Choumbakos, Venture Development Group, will lead a program on “Capital Formation: Needs, Models and Successes”. Workshop participants will consider important business financing topics including getting ready to seek financing, understanding potential sources, presenting your opportunity, making the financing deal and life after the deal. Written resources and assistance sources will be identified.

On Wednesday, April 23 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Dr. Gina Stewart of Sage Technology Management, Inc. will lead a program on “Intellectual Property: What it is and How to Protect it”. This workshop will introduce the foundations of intellectual property (IP) with particular attention to the IP issues facing biotechnology and life science businesses. Participants will be introduced to the four main areas of intellectual property law - trade secret, patent, copyright and trademark - and the process required to protect IP in each of those areas.

These programs are made possible through the collaboration of the NCCCS BioNetwork BioBusiness Center and the Appalachian State University’s Center for Entrepreneurship. The NCCCS BioNetwork is a statewide initiative that connects community colleges across North Carolina, in providing specialized training, curricula, and business support for the biotechnology, pharmaceutical and life sciences industries. The BioBusiness Center serves as an innovative service hub where researchers and entrepreneurs can find start-up information, educational programs, business direction, support coordination, mentoring and referrals to launch their enterprise.

Programs are open to everyone and there is no cost to attend. RSVP with Julia Rowland at the Center for Entrepreneurship, rowlandja@appstate.edu or 262-8325.
